Since 1972, National School Nurse Day has been set aside to recognize school nurses. National School Nurse Day was established to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting. This year, building on the increased visibility of nurses' contributions, National Nurses' Week has been expanded to Nurses' Month in May. School Nurse Day is May 12, 2021. During Day two of our IASN annual conference we gave out several awards. This years winner of the KA Coffman award is the Indiana Epilepsy Foundation. The award was accepted by the organizations executive director - Ryan Keys. Jeannie Langenkamp BSN RN was named as our School Nurse of the Year. She works at Maple Glen Elementary at Westfield Washington Schools and was nominated by her supervisor Teresa Layton. The 2019 IASN School Nurse Administrator of the Year is Jennifer Wright RN. Jennifer is the Director of School Nursing for the Avon and Brownsburg school districts and was nominated by Brittany Waggoner! .Congratulations to this year's awards winners! ...

Last week on November 6th and 7th over 200 motivated school nurses attended our annual conference! The conference started out with a bang with Dr. Jane Chevako and her menagerie of characters with the topic of "Are you my School Nurse" Other topics for the first day included vaping, human trafficking and GI/Ostomy care. We had an informative and productive IASN membership meeting and adopted a revision of our bylaws (see the bylaws section). The second day kicked off with Dr. Jane again and her topic of "Hots, Snots and Trots" which was a great overview of the major health issues that most school nurses face. INDIANA SCHOOL NURSE OF THE YEAR Patricia Cunningham, MSN, MBM, RN, was presented with Indiana's School Nurse of the Year award at the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis recently. Pat is the school nurse coordinator for Merrillville Schools. Pat describes herself as "very passionate when it comes to nursing, teaching, and serving the community. I love school nursing, but I love my students more. I consider my vocation as more than a job or a career; I consider it a ministry."
